Zinc is an essential mineral found in almost every cell in your body. It sets off hundreds of bio-chemical reactions required to keep your body functioning properly. Deficiency is rare in those who eat a balanced diet. People most susceptible to deficiency would be vegetarians, alcoholics, and those suffering from general malnutrition. At least that's what the public documents say.
My daughter certainly would not seem to fall into the deficiency group, but she has been prone to seasonal respiratory problems. We added a small amount zinc to her supplements and it helped boost her immune system. She went through this last winter without being sick once.
Where to get it –
Beans, beef, chicken – dark meat, coffee, liver, maple syrup, oysters, pork, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and yogurt.
There is a question of safety when taking large doses. I give my daughter 50 mg. a day, and that has worked just fine. I personally am not comfortable with high dosages of any supplement.
